Sunday 23 April 2006. Live On The Park on Londons Hyde Park, some very talented jazz artistes get together to play a benefit gig for Hospital Radio Barnet. A wet and dreary London afternoon is brightened by the sounds of some fantastic Jazz.
StoryLondon based American vocalist Katherine Gang started the afternoon off with some songs from her debut CD "Laughing At Lonely" (33 records) and some all time classics. Time Out recently called Katherine a "Classy singer/songwriter tipped for the top". Liane Carroll (Double BBC Jazz Award Winner) recently said "Katherine Gang has a voice that draws you into whatever world she's sharing with you & you genuinely don't want to escape…….I think she's absolutely marvellous". Katherine was accompanied by pianist James Pearson, a regular on the BBC Radio 2 'Friday Night is Music Night' Show and fresh from Ronnie Scott's. Next up was Australian headliner Nina Ferro, who recently performed at the opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games, and rising guitarist Joe Caleb. Nina was followed by teenage singing sensation Joe Gibbons who was accompanied by the band - James Pearson (piano), Sam Burgess (bass) and Mark Fletcher (drums) Tammy Weis then joined the band on stage. Time Out recently said of Tammy "There are a lot of second rate young jazz singers around at the moment but Weis isn't one of them - she's the real deal and well worth checking out. Then came British Jazz icon Tina May, who you can hear at the start and end of ITV's Airline show as she sings its theme 'Come Fly With Me'. Tina was accompanied by former Young Musician of the Year Tom Cawley on piano, Simon Thorpe on bass, Steve '600 Club' Rubie on flute and Mark Fletcher on drums. All the artistes then returned to the stage for an impromptu grand finale, rounding off an excellent lunchtime programme of jazz. Hospital Radio Barnet is extremely grateful to all these artists who all appeared free of charge, and we would like to thank them. Also the proprietors of Live! On The Park for allowing us to use the venue free of charge, the people who turned up to support the event on the day, and finally to our very own Tony Steinberg for putting it all together.
